Dev Patel, known for his role in "Lion", is making his directorial debut with the upcoming action thriller "Monkey Man". Set to release worldwide on April 5, the film is inspired by the legend of Lord Hanuman and is set in Mumbai.
The official trailer, released by Hollywood studio Universal Pictures, showcases well-choreographed fight and chase sequences. Patel stars as Kid, a man seeking vengeance against corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to oppress the poor and powerless.
The story follows Kid as he ekes out a living in an underground fight club, where he dons a gorilla mask and endures brutal beatings for money. After discovering a way to infiltrate the city's elite, Kid's childhood trauma drives him to seek retribution, unleashing an explosive campaign against those who took everything from him.
The film also features popular Indian actors Sobhita Dhulipala, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, Sikandar Kher, Pitobash, Makarand Deshpande, and Sharlto Copley.
The trailer showcases Patel engaging in hand-to-hand combat and taking on multiple criminals, reminiscent of Keanu Reeves' character in the "John Wick" franchise. Interestingly, Thunder Road Films, a producer of the "John Wick" movies, is also involved in "Monkey Man".
The film is produced by Patel, Jomon Thomas, Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, Ian Cooper, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Christine Haebler, and Anjay Nagpal. Patel developed the movie from his original story, co-writing the screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee.
