turbulent week Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen
Jarrett Allen's double-double streak ends at 16 games, but the Cavs' frontcourt shines in a win over the Spurs.
Jarrett Allen has been a double-double machine, but his streak was snapped at 16 games due to an injury. Despite skepticism that he'd play, he has continued to show up for his team, understanding the importance of his role as the anchor for the Cavs lineup. With Evan Mobley returning from knee surgery and backup center Tristan Thompson suspended, Allen has stepped into a boosted offensive role, scoring in double figures in each of his last 20 contests.
Against the Spurs, Allen finished with 26 points and 16 rebounds, while Mobley put on a display of the next generation of the NBA with 28 points and 10 rebounds. The Cavs frontcourt combined for 56 points and 26 rebounds on 22-of-33 shooting, making history as the first time Cleveland had three players finish with 25 or more points while shooting 60% or better from the field in a single game.
The Cavs have identified as a defense-first team since the beginning of the season, holding the Spurs to 36.7% from the field and 30% from 3-point range. They forced 12 total turnovers and scored 19 points off said turnovers. As the offense continues to grow, the Cavs must continue to prioritize their defense to surpass the first round of the postseason. They entered Saturday ranked third in opponents points per game and have held a team below 105 points 12 times this season.
"I think this year we've done a better job of containing the ball, keeping it in front of us, and eliminating those easy one-mores," coach J.B. Bickerstaff said.
