The 2024 Grammys were a night of firsts and surprises, with Mariah Carey presenting Miley Cyrus with her first-ever Grammy for best pop solo performance. Cyrus almost missed the show due to rain in Los Angeles, but was thrilled to share the stage with Carey. Luke Combs performed a cover of Tracy Chapman's Fast Car, which won him Song of the Year at the 2023 CMAs. Dua Lipa opened the show with a high-energy medley, and Trevor Noah greeted the crowd with a kiss on the cheek from Meryl Streep.
The night was a celebration of female artists, with SZA leading the nominations with nine, followed by Victoria Monét and Phoebe Bridgers with seven. Other performers included Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, Olivia Rodrigo, Burna Boy, and Travis Scott. Bridgers and her band boygenius won four Grammys before the main telecast, and newcomer Coco Jones took home the award for best R&B performance.
Producer Jack Antonoff won producer of the year for the third year in a row, and Kylie Minogue won best pop dance recording for Padam Padam. Peso Pluma and Barbie also won their first Grammys, and Tyla won best African music performance with her hit Water. Jimmy Jam presented the R&B and rap categories, with Killer Mike and Brandy Clark taking home awards for best rap performance and best americana performance, respectively.
Michelle Obama won her second Grammy for best audio book, narration, and storytelling recording, and the night was full of surprises and memorable moments.
