Grammys 2024: Phoebe Bridgers boygenius win big
Phoebe Bridgers wins four early Grammy Awards, with her bandmates, including best rock performance, and best rock song.
At the 66th Grammy Awards, Phoebe Bridgers took an early lead, winning four trophies ahead of the main telecast. Host/songwriter Justin Tranter presented her with the first award of the night for best pop duo/group performance, which went to SZA and Phoebe Bridgers for Ghost in the Machine. Phoebe wasn't on stage for that but later skipped her way up with her band boygenius - consisting of herself, Lucy Dacus, and Julian Baker - clad in matching white suits, when they won their first Grammy as a group for best rock performance for Not Strong Enough. They later won for best rock song and best alternative music album.
Coco Jones won best R&B performance for ICU, competing against SZA's Kill Bill and Victoria Monet's How Does It Make You Feel. SZA also won for the best progressive R&B album for S.O.S.
Jack Antonoff won producer of the year, non-classical for a third year in a row, tying Babyface as the only other producer to do so consecutively. Kylie Minogue also won for best pop dance recording with Padam Padam, her first win in 18 years.
Peso Pluma won his first Grammy for best musica Mexicana album for his Genesis, and Barbie took home two Grammys, one for compilation soundtrack for visual media and the other for best song written for visual media. Billie Eilish and Finneas won the song written for visual media trophy for their Barbie ballad What Was I Made For.
Dua Lipa and Victoria Monet were among the stunning looks on the arrivals carpet. Best African music performance went to South African singer Tyla for her hit, Water, marking her first Grammy nomination and win.
Jimmy Jam presented the bulk of the R&B and rap categories, with PJ Morton and Susan Carol winning best traditional R&B performance for Good Morning. Best rap performance went to Killer Mike Featuring Andre 3000, Future and Eryn Allen Kane for Scientists & Engineers. Killer Mike also took home best rap album for Michael.
Brandy Clark won her first Grammy for best americana performance for her track Dear Insecurity. Michelle Obama won a Grammy for best audio book, narration, and storytelling recording for The Light We Carry: Overcoming In Uncertain Times.
Expect to see a spotlight on female nominees as the night continues. SZA is the lead contender with nine nominations, followed closely by Monet and Bridgers with seven. There are also a few history-making opportunities, including a Black woman potentially winning album of the year for the first time since 1999.
The lineup for the night includes performances from SZA, Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, Eilish, Rodrigo, Lipa, Burna Boy, Luke Combs, and Travis Scott.
