Leeds punish Plymouth extra-time Villa Chelsea FA Cup tie
Leeds scores 3 extra-time goals to defeat Plymouth 4-1, advancing to FA Cup fifth round. Next up: Aston Villa or Chelsea.
Leeds secured a spot in the FA Cup fifth round with a 4-1 victory over Plymouth after three extra-time goals. The win was sealed by substitutes Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, who combined to put Leeds 3-1 up before an own goal by Plymouth's Ryan Hardie. Leeds will now face Premier League Aston Villa or Chelsea on February 28th.
The game came to life in the 13th minute when a brilliant through-ball from Sam Byram found Mateo Joseph on the run. Joseph's shot was turned onto the frame of the goal by the Northern Ireland keeper Conor Hazard. Leeds continued to put pressure on Plymouth, hitting the woodwork again in the 20th minute with a thundering drive from Joel Piroe.
Plymouth responded with a counter-attack, but Leeds' defense held strong. The game picked up again in the second half, with Wilfried Gnonto firing Leeds ahead with a superb strike from the edge of the box. Despite a late equalizer from Plymouth, Leeds dominated in extra time with goals from Summerville and Rutter.
The victory over Plymouth sets up a mouthwatering away tie against Premier League opposition in the next round. The first game between Chelsea and Villa ended in a draw, with the replay set to take place tonight. Leeds fans will be eagerly awaiting the outcome of that match as they look forward to the next round of the FA Cup.
