CNN declares Larry Hogan's entry into Maryland Senate race Chuck Schumer's nightmare
Former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan entering Maryland Senate race called "Chuck Schumer's nightmare" by CNN, jeopardizing Democrats' majority.
Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has announced that he is running for the Senate, a move that has been described as "Chuck Schumer's nightmare" by CNN. Hogan, a Republican, is hoping to fill the seat being vacated by retiring Democrat Senator Ben Cardin. CNN's David Chalian highlighted the significance of Hogan's entry into the race, noting that it could put the Democrats' majority in further jeopardy.
During a segment on "Inside Politics," anchor Dana Bash stressed how Hogan is "incredibly popular" and asked Chalian to "put this in perspective." Chalian explained that Hogan's entry into the race could drain resources away from other critical Senate races in red states like Montana and Ohio, where Democrats are already facing tough battles for re-election. He also noted that Hogan's popularity in Maryland could pose a challenge for Democrats, despite the fact that it is a blue state.
Hogan, who is known for his outspoken criticism of former President Trump, has previously considered running in the 2024 Republican presidential primary. He has also been floated as a potential candidate for the No Labels ticket, but recently stepped down from the leadership of the third-party movement. Hogan has offered his 2024 endorsement to GOP hopeful Nikki Haley.
In a video released announcing his Senate run, Hogan stated that he is running "not to serve one party -- but to stand up to both parties, fight for Maryland, and fix our nation's broken politics." He emphasized that he had done this as Maryland's governor and would continue to do so in the Senate.
Sen. Steve Daines of Montana, chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, expressed his support for Hogan, saying, "Governor Hogan is a great leader for Maryland, and that's why he remains overwhelmingly popular in the state. We look forward to welcoming him to the United States Senate."
Hogan served two terms as governor from 2015-2023 and was previously a successful business leader before entering politics. His entry into the Senate race is expected to be a significant development in the 2022 midterm elections.
