Tragic helicopter crash in San Diego during storm kills five Marines, all in their 20s. Efforts underway to recover their remains.
The Marine Corps has identified the five Marines who tragically lost their lives when their CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter crashed in the mountains during a severe storm near San Diego. All of the Marines were in their 20s and were part of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
The squadron's commanding officer, Lt. Col. Nicholas J. Harvey, expressed the deep sense of loss and grief felt by the entire "Flying Tigers" family and the surrounding community. The fallen Marines were remembered for their dedication and service, with special tributes to Lance Cpl. Donovan Davis, who had recently been promoted to lance corporal, and Capt. Miguel Nava, a graduate of Comstock Park High School and the U.S. Naval Academy.
The other Marines who perished in the crash were Sgt. Alec Langen, Capt. Jack Casey, and Capt. Benjamin Moulton. The helicopter went missing on its return journey to Miramar from Creech Air Force Base and was located the following morning near Pine Valley. The recovery of the Marines' remains is expected to be a lengthy process due to the challenging weather and terrain.
The military is conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash, and Marines are maintaining a constant presence with the remains in accordance with their commitment to never leave any Marine behind. The loss of these brave service members is a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve in the armed forces.
