Bahrain GP: Max Verstappen dominant in opening 2024 F1 race with Sergio Perez sealing Red Bull one-two

Verstappen leads Red Bull one-two at Bahrain Grand Prix, extending winning streak to eight races in dominant start to season.

Max Verstappen kicked off his quest for a fourth consecutive Formula 1 world championship title in style by leading a Red Bull one-two at the Bahrain Grand Prix, with team-mate Sergio Perez following closely behind.

The Dutch driver defended his lead from pole position against Charles Leclerc of Ferrari at the start of the race and never looked back, maintaining a comfortable lead throughout the event at the Bahrain International Circuit. Verstappen's impressive performance was further highlighted by him setting the fastest lap and finishing a remarkable 22 seconds ahead of Perez.

Carlos Sainz, in his final season with Ferrari before being replaced by Lewis Hamilton, showed his skill by securing the last spot on the podium. Sainz outperformed his team-mate Leclerc, who faced brake issues and had to settle for fourth place after dropping back from his starting position.

In a battle for sixth place, Lando Norris of McLaren held off Hamilton in the Mercedes, while Norris's team-mate Oscar Piastri finished in eighth. Aston Martin rounded out the top 10 with Fernando Alonso leading his team-mate Lance Stroll across the finish line.

All 20 cars completed the race, showcasing impressive reliability across the board. Verstappen's victory extends his winning streak to eight races, following his dominant performance in the previous season.

Red Bull's strong showing at Bahrain reaffirms predictions of their continued dominance in the constructors' championship, after winning the majority of races in the previous year. However, the unique challenges of the Sakhir circuit offer hope to rivals that they can pose a stronger challenge at the upcoming Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on the Jeddah street circuit.
