Sean Ono Lennon Mother's Day 2024 Oscars Speech for Yoko Ono
Sean Ono Lennon gives Mother's Day shout-out to Yoko Ono during Oscars win for animated short film 'WAR IS OVER!'
On Sunday, the 2024 Oscars took place, coinciding with Mother's Day in the U.K. During the emotional win for best animated short for WAR IS OVER! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko, Sean Ono Lennon, the son of Yoko Ono and John Lennon, made sure to give his mother a special shout-out.
As an executive producer on the short film, Ono Lennon joined director Dave Mullins and producer Brad Booker on stage at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Despite the "wrap-it-up" music playing, Sean took a moment to honor his mother, who turned 91 in February, by asking the audience to wish Yoko Ono a happy Mother's Day.
Sean, the only child of Ono and Lennon, was born in 1975. Yoko Ono also has a daughter, Kyoko Chan Cox, with her ex-husband Anthony Cox, and John Lennon had a son, Julian Lennon, from his first marriage to Cynthia.
WAR IS OVER! is a film co-written by Sean and Mullins, set at a World War I front where a carrier pigeon delivers messages between two soldiers playing chess, unaware they are on opposing sides.
Yoko Ono and John Lennon had collaborated on multiple occasions before Lennon's tragic death in 1980, most notably on the iconic Christmas song "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)." The track continues to be a holiday favorite, reaching No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022, over 50 years after its initial release.
