Texas A&M Targets Trev Alberts Athletic Director Nebraska Football Legend Lined Up to Replace Ross Bjork
Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts targeted by Texas A&M. Alberts, a former Huskers football star, has led department to success.
Texas A&M has set its sights on Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts for the same position, as confirmed by 247Sports. If Alberts were to take on this role, he would be stepping in to fill the shoes of Ross Bjork, who departed in January to assume the role of athletics director at Ohio State. Alberts, a former Nebraska football star, has overseen a period of substantial growth within the athletic department.
During his tenure, Alberts made the bold decision to part ways with former Nebraska standout Scott Frost and instead brought in former Baylor and Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule. Despite an overall record of 5-7 in his first season, Rhule showed promise and delivered strong results. Additionally, Alberts made history by hosting Nebraska Volleyball Day in August 2023, drawing a record-breaking crowd of over 92,000 fans at Memorial Stadium for the most attended women's sporting event of all time. The women's basketball team at Nebraska is on track to make consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2014, while the men's team is also poised to potentially reach the Big Dance for the first time in years.
Alberts took the helm of Nebraska's athletic department in 2021, transitioning from his alma mater, Nebraska-Omaha. Despite lacking prior administrative experience at the FBS level, Alberts has proven his leadership abilities and commitment to the program. Nebraska-Omaha made the difficult decision to discontinue its football program during the move to the Summit League.
In a sign of confidence in Alberts' leadership, Nebraska extended his contract in November 2023, ensuring his tenure through 2031. Starting in 2026, Alberts is set to receive over $2 million annually. Should Texas A&M successfully recruit Alberts, they would need to navigate a $4 million buyout from his Nebraska contract, as reported by Yahoo Sport.
Alberts' legacy as a standout linebacker for Nebraska in the 1990s is a testament to his dedication and skill on the field. His number 34 jersey has been retired by the program, and in 1993, he was honored with the Butkus Award and named an All-American. With his experience, vision, and track record of success, Alberts could bring a new era of excellence to Texas A&M's athletic program.
