"Fans Troll Pittsburgh Pirates Jack Suwinski Solar Eclipse"
Pirates players watch solar eclipse, one player wears glasses incorrectly, sparking memes and bets, but performs well in game.
On Monday afternoon, a solar eclipse captured the attention of people across the United States, including the baseball community. In Cleveland, where the Guardians play, fans were invited to Progressive Field to witness the eclipse as it passed over the city. Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh, the Pirates also took a moment to observe the rare astrological event at PNC Park.
Photos shared by Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette showed several Pirates players, such as Mitch Keller, Andrew McCutchen, Marco Gonzales, and Jared Jones, wearing protective glasses to safely view the eclipse. However, one player, Jack Suwinski, was caught with the glasses on his forehead, appearing to stare directly at the eclipse without protection.
While staring at the sun on a regular day can be harmful to one's eyes, looking at a solar eclipse without proper eyewear is even more dangerous. It's possible that the photo captured just a brief moment when Suwinski was not wearing his glasses correctly. Another picture shared by Pittsburgh Baseball Now's Danny Demillo showed Suwinski wearing the glasses properly, indicating that he may have just momentarily misplaced them.
Despite the harmless mistake, fans on social media were quick to poke fun at Suwinski's blunder. Some created memes, while others even attempted to place bets on his performance in the Pirates' game against the Detroit Tigers that evening. However, Suwinski proved them wrong by drawing a walk in his first plate appearance and later hitting a single to contribute to his team's success.
Suwinski, a 25-year-old center fielder, is currently batting .194 with a .592 OPS in the 2024 season, despite the Pirates' strong 8-2 start. The incident with the eclipse may have provided some lighthearted entertainment, but Suwinski's performance on the field speaks for itself.
