Boston Bruins defenseman Derek Forbort took a significant step in his rehabilitation process on Tuesday. He reported to Providence on a long-term injury loan, allowing him to join the team for practice. The loan can last up to three games and six days, giving both Forbort and the Bruins the opportunity to assess his readiness for the upcoming Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Forbort faced a challenging 2023-24 season, dealing with two undisclosed "significant injuries" that led to his placement on long-term injured reserve in March for the second time in the year. General manager Don Sweeney hinted at the possibility of surgery for one of the injuries. With only 35 games played this season, Forbort's limited availability has been a setback for the Bruins, especially on the penalty kill where he has been a valuable asset.
There is uncertainty surrounding Forbort's availability for the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but coach Jim Montgomery expressed optimism about his potential return in the future. In addition to Forbort's move to Providence, the Bruins also assigned Johnny Beecher to the AHL team and called up Jayson Megna to Boston. Megna, a 6-foot center, has had a productive season with 18 goals and 33 assists in 67 games for Providence, including a game-winning shootout goal on Sunday.
As the Bruins prepare for their regular-season finale against the Ottawa Senators, they have the opportunity to clinch the Atlantic Division title. The team's focus is on finishing the season strong and potentially welcoming Forbort back to the lineup for the playoff push. With key roster moves and a competitive spirit, the Bruins are poised for success as they head into the postseason.
