Bowie High School shooting suspect in custody: WFAA reported police say
A shooting at Bowie High School in Arlington prompts lockdown, one person hospitalized. Parents and students express fear and concern.
Bowie High School in Arlington is currently on lockdown as police are responding to a shooting that occurred on campus outside the school building. Officials have confirmed that one person has been taken to the hospital, and the situation is still ongoing. The school has communicated through social media that all students inside the building are safe, and dismissal has been delayed. In addition to Arlington police, Mansfield police have also arrived at the scene.
A reunification area has been established at 1001 E. Division Street at the Arlington ISD Athletics and Aquatics Center for parents and students to reunite safely. Authorities are urging people to avoid the school premises at this time. All students on campus will be transported to the reunification center via buses, and updates on when students will be released will be provided by Arlington ISD. Overflow parking for reunification is available at lot 11 at AT&T Stadium.
A concerned mother shared her experience of receiving text messages about the incident and trying to reach her daughter, who was inside the school during the lockdown. She expressed relief that her daughter was safe but emphasized the importance of schools being a safe environment for learning. Another student, close to graduation, expressed fear and disbelief that such an incident could happen at their school.
A neighbor living across the street from the school recounted hearing sirens and receiving a call about the shooting, highlighting the shock and concern felt by the community. The neighbor mentioned consoling students who were visibly upset and described the tense atmosphere in the vicinity of the school.
In light of recent school shootings in Texas, including one at Wilmer-Hutchins High School and another at Timberview High School, the importance of school safety measures has been underscored. Despite the implementation of new safety requirements, concerns remain about the adequacy of funding for security measures in schools.
