Dallas Stars community initiatives reaching kids in Mexico City
Dallas Stars VP Al Montoya promotes hockey in underrepresented communities, including Mexico City, emphasizing the game is for everyone.
When the Dallas Stars make it to the postseason, Al Montoya believes that everyone wins, especially the community. As the first Cuban-American to play in the NHL and now serving as the Dallas Stars Vice President of Cultural Growth and Strategy, Montoya is dedicated to expanding the Stars' reach and promoting the game of hockey in under-represented communities, both locally and internationally.
Recently returning from a trip to Mexico City, Montoya expressed excitement about the opportunity to showcase the team's efforts and spread their message. That message is simple yet powerful - hockey is a game for everyone. Through initiatives like the Learn to Play program, which offers a six-week introduction to hockey for children aged four to ten in Mexico City, the Stars are providing access to a sport that may have otherwise been out of reach for these kids.
Partnering with the National Hockey League, the Learn to Play program has already impacted 50 children, giving them a chance to experience the joy of playing hockey. Locally, Montoya has collaborated with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dallas to launch the Future Stars initiative, which introduces hockey to schools and facilities across the region. The program has seen significant growth, expanding from two locations in 2023 to nine locations in 2024, with ongoing support and equipment provided for weekly youth hockey programs in underserved communities.
The team's presence in the Stanley Cup Playoffs has not only boosted fan engagement but also enhanced community outreach efforts. The increased attention has led to a rise in fundraising through the 50/50 raffle at home games, with half of the proceeds benefiting the Dallas Stars Foundation. This foundation plays a crucial role in supporting youth hockey, community engagement, and health and education initiatives in North Texas.
As the Dallas Stars continue their journey in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, facing off against the Colorado Avalanche in the second round, Montoya remains committed to leveraging the team's success to make a positive impact on the community and inspire the next generation of hockey players.
