Mirage Las Vegas closing after 34 years
The iconic Mirage Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip will close this summer, making way for a new Guitar Hotel.
The iconic Mirage hotel on the Las Vegas Strip will be closing its doors for the last time this summer, marking the end of an era. Hard Rock International, which acquired the property in 2022, announced that operations will officially cease on July 17, with the last day of occupancy being July 14. The Mirage, which opened in 1989, played a significant role in transforming the desert destination into a hub of luxury and megaresorts.
Following in the footsteps of The Mirage, other major hotels like Excalibur, Luxor, and the MGM Grand quickly sprung up in the next few years. The closure of The Mirage will pave the way for Hard Rock International to begin construction on the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Guitar Hotel Las Vegas. The new integrated resort will feature a nearly 700 ft. guitar-shaped hotel at the center of the famous Las Vegas Strip, set to open in 2027.
Jim Allen, chairman of HRI, expressed gratitude to the Las Vegas community and team members for their warm welcome after 34 years at The Mirage. This closure comes on the heels of The Tropicana Las Vegas shutting down in April, just before its 67th anniversary. The closure of the Tropicana was to make way for a potential $1.5 billion Major League Baseball stadium deal, a move that has faced criticism from sports experts and fans.
The Tropicana site, built in the 1950s, is set to be demolished by implosion in late 2024. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The changing landscape of the Las Vegas Strip reflects the city's ever-evolving nature, with new developments and transformations on the horizon.
