The highly anticipated "Wicked" movie trailer has finally been released, much to the delight of fans. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film is set to be released in two parts, with the first installment hitting theaters on Nov. 25 and the second part scheduled for 2025, just in time for Thanksgiving. The star-studded cast includes Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Michelle Yeoh as the headmistress, and Peter Dinklage as Dr. Dillamond. Jeff Goldblum also makes an appearance as the man behind the curtain.
The trailer takes viewers on a journey to Shiz University in the Land of Oz, where Elphaba and Glinda's friendship blossoms. Iconic songs from the hit musical, such as "Popular" and "Defying Gravity," are featured in quick snippets throughout the trailer.
Producer Marc Platt always envisioned "Wicked" as a movie after reading the novel, but it was Stephen Schwartz who suggested adding music and taking the story to Broadway first. Director Jon M. Chu brings a mix of admiration for the stage production and a grand vision for the big screen adaptation.
The road to bringing "Wicked" to the screen has been a long and winding one, much like the Yellow Brick Road itself. Originally slated for a 2019 release, the movie faced delays and setbacks, including being removed from the calendar entirely in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges, the team behind "Wicked" remained determined to bring their vision to life on the silver screen, dreaming big every step of the way.
