Leeds United leader move European club
Leeds United defender Max Wober set for permanent move to Borussia Monchengladbach, impressing in Bundesliga and attracting interest for Euro 2024.
Leeds United defender Max Wober is on the verge of making a permanent move to Borussia Monchengladbach this summer, as per reports. The Austrian player, who arrived at Leeds from RB Salzburg in January 2023, was allowed to go on loan to the Bundesliga club following Leeds' relegation from the Premier League last season.
Despite facing some injuries, Wober, who was praised by former Leeds manager Jesse Marsch as a 'leader', has become a fan favorite at Gladbach after featuring in 27 matches. His performances have been so impressive that he is now on track to secure a spot in Austria's Euro 2024 squad.
Reports from Kronen Zeitung suggest that Gladbach is eager to make Wober's loan deal permanent this summer in a bid to strengthen their squad after finishing 14th in the Bundesliga in the 2023/24 season. Wober's versatility as a left-footed defender has been a key asset for Gladbach, as he has excelled both as a center-back and as a left-back when needed.
However, negotiations for a permanent transfer may hit a snag due to the difference in valuation between the two clubs. While Gladbach is reportedly willing to pay £7.7m for the 26-year-old, Leeds is holding out for £14.5m. This could pose a challenge for Gladbach, especially as Leeds looks to recoup funds following their loss in the Championship playoff final.
Despite the potential financial hurdles, Gladbach is determined to keep Wober at the club. Sporting director Roland Virkus has expressed the club's desire to retain the defender, stating, "We are in talks with everyone involved, of course we would like to keep Max with us. But the demands are extremely high." The situation remains fluid as both clubs aim to reach a mutually beneficial agreement for Wober's permanent transfer to Borussia Monchengladbach.
