Security Wembley UCL final ramped up
Wembley Stadium beefs up security for Champions League final to avoid chaos seen in past Euro 2020 and Champions League finals.
Wembley Stadium is taking security to the next level for the upcoming Champions League final, determined to avoid a repeat of past incidents that marred major events. The chaos at the Euro 2020 showpiece in Paris highlighted the need for improved security measures, with UEFA facing criticism for failing to prevent overcrowding and queuing issues for Liverpool and Madrid fans. Last year's final in Istanbul also faced complaints about transportation problems for fans trying to access the Ataturk Olympic Stadium.
To address these concerns, Wembley Stadium has implemented a comprehensive security plan, including the largest deployment of stewards in its history. With 2,500 stewards on duty, along with £5 million ($6.3m) in security upgrades, the stadium is better equipped to handle any potential issues. New gates, perimeter fencing, improved door locks, and an internal control room will enhance monitoring of fan behavior. Stewards will also be equipped with body cams for added security.
The Metropolitan Police will have 2,000 officers, including 400 from outside London, patrolling the city during the final. In addition to the match itself, police will be present at fan events and protests to ensure public safety. Dedicated fan zones have been set up for Dortmund and Madrid supporters in Hyde Park and Victoria Embankment, respectively, with each team receiving 25,000 tickets.
Learning from past events, organizers have made adjustments to improve the fan experience. Fans will be allowed to enter the stadium four hours before kickoff, an increase from the usual two hours. Chris Bryant, the director of tournaments and events for the English Football Association, emphasized the importance of implementing additional measures to prevent chaos like that seen at Euro 2020.
Following an investigation into the disorder at the previous final, it was revealed that ticketless and intoxicated fans posed a serious risk to public safety. Some fans resorted to violence, assaulting stewards to gain entry to the stadium. With these lessons in mind, Wembley Stadium and law enforcement are determined to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all fans attending the Champions League final.
