University of the Arts closure due to lost accreditation
University of the Arts in Philadelphia closes due to lost accreditation, following Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Town hall on June 3.
The University of the Arts, following in the footsteps of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, has recently announced its closure due to losing accreditation. This news has left students and staff in shock, with operations set to cease on June 7 and all upcoming courses and enrollments canceled. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) cited the school's failure to inform them of the closure in a timely manner as a reason for withdrawing accreditation.
In a heartfelt statement to the UArts community, board of trustees chair Judson Aaron and university president Kerry Walk expressed their struggle to comprehend the situation. The institution has faced financial challenges for years, with declining enrollments and revenues, as well as increasing expenses. Town hall meetings will be held for students, faculty, and staff to address any questions or concerns, with plans to establish transfer pathways for students to continue their education at other institutions like Temple University, Drexel University, and Moore College of Art and Design.
Despite efforts to overcome financial obstacles, the sudden and significant expenses proved insurmountable. State Rep. Ben Waxman, representing the district that includes the University of the Arts, expressed disappointment and frustration over the closure, recognizing the school's longstanding contribution to creativity and culture in Center City Philadelphia.
The closure of UArts comes shortly after the announcement of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts ending its college program, highlighting a challenging time for fine arts education in the area. As the community grapples with the loss of these institutions, efforts are being made to support displaced students and understand the decisions leading to these closures.
