NC DMV Business: Saturday Hours Return at Select Driver License Offices

NC DMV opens selected offices on Saturdays to handle summer rush. Walk-ins welcome for various services, including REAL IDs. Save time online.

Summer is a time of chaos and commotion at the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles, with an influx of people seeking various services. To alleviate the strain, the agency has decided to open some of its busiest driver license offices on weekends.

A total of sixteen DMV offices will now be open for walk-in customers on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon until Aug. 24. These offices include locations in Raleigh on Spring Forest and Avent Ferry roads, as well as in Charlotte on David Taylor Drive and West Arrowood Road.

During these weekend hours, individuals can take care of most DMV-related tasks, such as obtaining new, renewed, or duplicate driver licenses or ID cards, making address changes, obtaining REAL IDs, and even taking road tests for those who have already completed the necessary tests.

While the DMV normally operates 115 driver license offices statewide on weekdays, individuals can schedule appointments up to 90 days in advance on the agency's website. However, walk-ins are also welcome, especially in the afternoons when services are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Lines at the DMV are a common sight in the Triangle and Charlotte areas, particularly during the summer months. This surge in demand is due to recent college graduates moving to the state and students attempting to secure licenses before the school year begins.

Due to staffing constraints, the DMV is unable to offer Saturday hours at all locations. Therefore, offices have been strategically selected based on where the agency believes the greatest impact can be made. This year, in addition to Raleigh and Charlotte, offices in Andrews, Asheville, Fayetteville, Graham, Greensboro, Greenville, Huntersville, Jacksonville, Monroe, Salisbury, Wilmington, and Winston-Salem will also be open on Saturdays.

In an effort to streamline processes and reduce wait times, the agency encourages individuals to explore online options for conducting DMV-related business at www.ncdot.gov/dmv/offices-services/online/. This allows individuals to avoid unnecessary trips to the office and complete tasks efficiently.
