Red Deer Polytechnic raises Progressive Pride flag

Red Deer Polytechnic raises Progressive Pride flag to kick off Pride Month, emphasizing inclusivity and support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Red Deer Polytechnic recently raised a Progressive Pride flag to kick off Pride Month. Representatives from the post-secondary institution, the Students' Association of RDP (SARDP), and the Central Alberta Pride Society (CAPS) came together for a flag-raising ceremony at the main campus.

Lindsay Engel, the Academic and Student Experience vice-president at RDP, emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive campus environment for all community members. The Progressive Pride flag raising is just one of the many events throughout the year that showcase Red Deer Polytechnic's dedication to fostering an inclusive learning and working environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to succeed.

SARDP president Devyn Shannon highlighted the significance of the flag raising, stating that it symbolizes values of equality, belonging, and empathy. Red Deer Polytechnic aims to be an ally and a welcoming space for all individuals, embodying the ideals of kindness, compassion, and respect.

The collaboration between RDP, SARDP, and CAPS has grown over the years, with a focus on organizing events like the Progressive Pride flag raising ceremony. Representatives from the Central Alberta Pride Society have been actively involved in promoting social change through support, awareness, and education.

Bobbi-Jo L'Hirondelle, CAPS vice-president, stressed the importance of creating spaces where individuals of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions feel valued and respected. The Pride flag raising ceremony serves as a visible symbol of the ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive environment free from judgment or prejudice.

Pride Month, celebrated annually in June, recognizes and celebrates the contributions of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to cultures and societies worldwide. By acknowledging and honoring Pride Month, organizations like Red Deer Polytechnic reaffirm their dedication to building a more inclusive and equitable world where love and acceptance prevail.

In addition to Pride Month celebrations, RDP and SARDP have also established an institutional Pride Week in March to show allyship and support for the Pride community. The Polytechnic offers various events and initiatives throughout the year, including activities to recognize National Indigenous History Month in June.
