San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano is currently facing a potential lifetime ban from Major League Baseball for allegedly engaging in betting on baseball games.

The 24-year-old player is currently being investigated by MLB for reportedly placing bets on games involving the Pittsburgh Pirates while he was on the team's injured list in 2023, as reported by the Associated Press.

Marcano has been sidelined since tearing his ACL on July 24, 2023. The Padres claimed him off waivers on Nov. 2, 2023, and subsequently placed him on the 10-day injured list on March 19, 2024.

Having made his major league debut in 2021, Marcano has showcased his skills both in the infield and outfield, maintaining a batting average of .217 with five home runs, 34 RBIs, and seven stolen bases in 149 games.

According to Major League Rule 21, engaging in betting on any baseball game in which a player, umpire, league official, or team employee has no duty to perform can result in a one-year suspension. However, betting on a game in which the individual must perform can lead to a lifetime ban.
