State of calamity declared for 2 areas affected by Kanlaon Volcano eruption
Kanlaon Volcano eruption in Philippines puts two cities in state of calamity. Evacuations underway, donations needed for affected residents.
On June 4, Canlaon City in Negros Oriental and La Castellana in Negros Occidental were declared under a state of calamity due to the "explosive eruption" of the Kanlaon Volcano the previous day. The volcano was placed under Alert Level 2 after producing a massive plume that rose to 5,000 meters.
In an interview with Rappler, La Castellana Mayor Alme Rhumyla Nicor-Mangilimutan stated that their town had been severely affected, with approximately 12,000 individuals impacted by the eruption and damage to crops and animals due to ash fall.
In Canlaon City, Councilor Angel Amador Soliva announced the unanimous approval of the state of calamity declaration during a Special Session. Over 23,000 individuals from various barangays were affected, leading to mandatory evacuations.
Despite the evacuation orders, many farmers were hesitant to leave due to concerns about their domesticated animals. Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian visited the affected areas, providing 50,000 family packs and promising financial assistance for the victims.
The Diocese of San Carlos, under Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, initiated a donation drive to support the affected individuals in both Negros Oriental and Occidental provinces. The call for support aimed to address the immediate needs of those impacted by the eruption.
