Longtime "Wheel of Fortune" host Pat Sajak bids farewell after over four decades, with Ryan Seacrest set to take over.
Longtime host Pat Sajak is saying goodbye to "Wheel of Fortune" after more than four decades on the show. His farewell episode will air on Friday, June 7, marking the end of Season 41.
Sajak announced his retirement in June 2023, revealing that Season 41 would be his last. The farewell episode was taped on April 5, and Sajak expressed gratitude to his fans, saying, "It's been a wonderful ride."
Since taking over as host in 1981, Sajak has become a beloved figure on the game show, where contestants guess letters to complete words and phrases for cash prizes. He succeeded Chuck Woolery, the show's original host from its debut in 1975.
Throughout his tenure, Sajak has received three Daytime Emmy Awards for outstanding game show host and a lifetime achievement award in 2011 alongside "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek.
Meanwhile, co-host Vanna White, who joined "Wheel of Fortune" in 1982, will continue her role on the show until at least 2026. Following Sajak's retirement, White considered leaving as well but ultimately decided to stay, stating, "I'm not ready to retire."
After Sajak's departure, White will be joined by Ryan Seacrest as the new host. Seacrest signed a multiyear deal with Sony Pictures Television to lead the show starting with Season 42 this fall.
Seacrest expressed his excitement about taking over from Sajak, calling it a privilege to follow in the footsteps of the legendary host. He will continue to host his radio show in Southern California, where "Wheel of Fortune" is taped.
Despite the changes, "Wheel of Fortune" remains a fan favorite, attracting millions of viewers daily and maintaining a dedicated fan base. The show's enduring popularity is a testament to the lasting appeal of the classic game show format.
