New Hunger Games book and movie prequel to tell Haymitch's story: Real or not real?

"Suzanne Collins announces new 'Hunger Games' book 'Sunrise on the Reaping' with movie adaptation to follow, diving into propaganda themes."

Get ready to enter the world of Panem once again, as Suzanne Collins has just announced the upcoming release of a new "Hunger Games" book, accompanied by a new movie. The highly anticipated fifth installment in the dystopian series, titled "Sunrise on the Reaping," is set to be published by Scholastic on March 18, 2025.

Collins revealed that she drew inspiration from the writings of 18th-century Scottish philosopher David Hume, particularly focusing on his ideas of implicit submission and the power dynamics between the masses and the few in society. She emphasized the exploration of propaganda and the manipulation of narratives in her latest work, reflecting on the relevance of the question "Real or not real?" in today's world.

Propaganda has always been a central theme in the "Hunger Games" universe, following the journey of Katniss Everdeen as she navigates a rebellion against the oppressive Panem government led by President Coriolanus Snow. "Sunrise on the Reaping" will transport readers 24 years prior to the original series, delving into the events surrounding the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, which introduced the character of Haymitch Abernathy.

Shortly after the book announcement, Lionsgate confirmed plans for the movie adaptation of "Sunrise on the Reaping," scheduled for release on Nov. 20, 2026. While casting details remain undisclosed, discussions are underway for director Francis Lawrence to return to helm the project.

Collins previously unveiled the prequel "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" in 2020, set 64 years before the original series. The film adaptation, starring Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird and Tom Blyth as Coriolanus Snow, garnered global success, grossing over $300 million worldwide.

Fans have long awaited a prequel centered on Haymitch Abernathy, with even Zegler expressing her desire for a trilogy exploring his origin story. The excitement surrounding the expansion of the "Hunger Games" universe continues to grow, promising a captivating journey back into the heart of the dystopian world created by Suzanne Collins.
