Johnny Canales, Tejano music star-maker and TV host, dies at 77

Tejano music legend Johnny Canales, known for launching stars like Selena, has died at 77. Fans remember his iconic catchphrase.

Johnny Canales, a legendary figure in Tejano music who shaped the careers of numerous stars, has sadly passed away at the age of 77.

His wife, Nora Canales, shared the news of his passing on Facebook, describing him as more than just a husband, father, and entertainer, but as a beacon of hope and joy for many.

Johnny Canales was known for his role as a musician and host of "The Johnny Canales Show," a program that aired from the 1980s until 2005, introducing Tejano stars like Selena, Emilio Navaira, and La Sombra to audiences across the United States.

Over the years, Canales helped these artists achieve two Grammy awards and eight nominations through his live TV show. His catchphrase, "You got it! Take it away!" became iconic among fans.

For many South Texans, Johnny Canales was a familiar presence on Sunday mornings, akin to Dick Clark on 'American Bandstand.' His impact on the music scene was profound, as he showcased genres and artists that were previously unknown to many in the U.S.

Miami-based filmmaker Adrian Arredondo, who is working on a documentary about Canales, described him as a true embodiment of the American Dream. Despite his illness, Canales remained a source of inspiration and humor to those around him.

Born in Robstown and serving in the Army before transitioning to radio and television, Johnny Canales' legacy will continue to live on through the lives he touched and the passion he brought to his work.

As the community mourns his loss, Nora Canales urged everyone to remember Johnny with joy and gratitude for the impact he had on so many lives. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
