The tragic mass shooting that occurred on Friday afternoon at a grocery store in Arkansas took place in a small town with a predominantly Black population. Details were still emerging, but reports indicated that at least two people were killed and nine others were injured in the shooting, including a critically injured police officer.

The shooting, which occurred around 11:30 a.m. local time, was captured in graphic videos posted on social media. The videos showed the gunman reloading a rifle multiple times and firing off numerous shots in different directions.

The shooter, who appeared to be a white man, was not immediately identified, nor was his motivation reported. Speculation on social media suggested that the shooter's race may have played a role in the incident, given the demographics of the town where the shooting took place.

Fordyce, where the shooting occurred, has a population that is about 51% Black, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. The town is located in Dallas County, where approximately 40% of the population is Black.

Statistics show that a majority of mass shootings in the U.S. over the past four decades have been carried out by white males. According to data from Statista, 54% of mass shootings between 1982 and December 2023 were committed by white shooters, compared to 17% by African American shooters and 8% by Latino shooters.
