Former Vezina Trophy Winner Trades Teams in Blockbuster NHL Trade

Bruins trade Ullmark to Senators for Korpisalo, Kastelic, and draft pick. Swayman likely to be No. 1 goalie in 2024-25.

The Boston Bruins wasted no time in addressing their goaltender situation as the offseason kicked off. In a bold move, they traded Linus Ullmark, the 2023 Vezina Trophy winner, to the Ottawa Senators. In return, they acquired goalie Joonas Korpisalo, forward Mark Kastelic, and a 2024 first-round draft pick.

This trade represents a significant shift for the Bruins, who had signed Ullmark to a hefty contract in 2021 but ultimately replaced him with Jeremy Swayman as their starting goalie during the 2023-24 season. Swayman's strong performance in the playoffs solidified his position as the likely No. 1 goalie for the upcoming season.

General manager Don Sweeney refrained from commenting on the trade, choosing to address it closer to the NHL draft. However, he did express gratitude towards Ullmark for his contributions to the team.

Ottawa is hoping for a rebound season from Ullmark, who had an impressive stint with the Bruins after starting his career in Buffalo. Korpisalo, on the other hand, brings experience and depth to the Bruins' goaltending roster.

As the Bruins look ahead to the upcoming season, they have also signed Brandon Bussi to a cost-effective contract, potentially setting up a competition for the backup goalie position behind Swayman.

The trade also involved forward Mark Kastelic and a first-round draft pick, adding depth and future prospects to the Bruins' roster. The draft pick, originally owned by the Bruins, had made its way to the Senators through a series of trades involving other teams.

Overall, the Bruins' decisive move to trade Ullmark and acquire Korpisalo and additional assets sets the stage for an intriguing offseason as they continue to shape their roster for the upcoming season.
