Canada Day 2024: Trudeau Celebrates Canadian Values Amid Festivities

Trudeau and Simon emphasize Canada's commitment to pluralism, inclusion, and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples in annual Canada Day address.

During his annual Canada Day speech, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau underscored Canada's dedication to pluralism, inclusion, and fairness, while also highlighting the ongoing efforts to address historical injustices and pursue reconciliation with Indigenous communities. Trudeau emphasized that these values bind Canadians together and attract people from around the globe to be part of the Canadian story, despite the injustices that have occurred and are being addressed through the journey of reconciliation.

Governor General Mary Simon echoed Trudeau's sentiments in a written statement, urging Canadians to embrace and celebrate diverse perspectives and stories. She encouraged empathy, curiosity, and dialogue, emphasizing the importance of advancing reconciliation in all aspects of life as a shared responsibility to shape an inclusive Canada.

As Canada commemorates its 157th birthday, celebrations are set to take place nationwide, with Memorial Day also observed in Newfoundland and Labrador. In Ottawa, the official Canada Day ceremonies will be held at LeBreton Flats Park due to ongoing construction at Parliament Hill. The event will feature family activities, musical performances, and a ceremonial flypast by the Royal Canadian Air Force to mark its 100th anniversary.

Additionally, the Unknown Soldier was laid to rest at the refurbished Newfoundland National War Memorial, with thousands in attendance to witness the final part of the Soldier's journey. Canadian Armed Forces chaplain Lt.-Col. Shawn Samson emphasized the sacrifice made by those who lay down their lives for their country, reflecting on the solemn occasion.
