MUNA & Gracie Abrams: Who's Set to Open for Taylor Swift in Kansas City?

Taylor Swift's upcoming concerts in Kansas City will feature opening acts MUNA and Gracie Abrams, who have been touring with Swift on her Eras Tour. MUNA is an indie-pop band, while Abrams is a singer-songwriter and the daughter of filmmaker J.J. Abrams.

Preparing a sold-out stadium filled with thousands of devoted Taylor Swift fans for the global star's return to Kansas City requires an extra dose of pop power. The Eras Tour has already seen a range of opening performers, including Phoebe Bridgers, Girl in Red, and Paramore, captivating audiences across the country. Now, queer-pop trio MUNA and singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams will join Swift as opening acts at Arrowhead Stadium on July 7 and 8.

Both MUNA and Gracie Abrams are touring with Swift for the first time, and they have already shared the stage with her on the highly anticipated Eras Tour. MUNA member Josette Maskin expressed their admiration for Swift, describing her show as a lesson in being the best musician alive. They feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to not only perform but also witness Swift's performance.

Now, the question arises: how did these talented artists secure a spot touring with one of the biggest pop stars in the world? Gracie Abrams may have a familiar last name because she is the daughter of renowned filmmaker J.J. Abrams, known for his work on "Star Trek," "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and TV shows like "Lost" and "Alias." Before her debut album "Good Riddance" released in February 2022, Abrams had already released two EPs and opened for Olivia Rodrigo on her "Sour" tour. She has also headlined three independent concert tours.

During a recent show in Cincinnati, Swift surprised the audience by inviting Abrams on stage after her set was canceled due to bad weather. Together, they performed Abrams' song "I miss you, I'm sorry" live. Abrams will also be playing a small show at Kansas City's Josey Records before her debut at Arrowhead Stadium.

Abrams will kick off the opening sets at Swift's Kansas City concerts, taking the stage at approximately 6:30 p.m. To get ready for her set, here are three songs to check out.

MUNA, pronounced "moon-a," is an American indie-pop band formed by Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson. The trio first met at the University of Southern California in 2013 and has been creating music together ever since. They released their first two albums, "About U" in 2017 and "Saves the World" in 2019, under RCA Records before signing with Phoebe Bridgers' record label, Saddest Factory, in 2021.

MUNA gained attention with their single "Silk Chiffon," featuring Phoebe Bridgers, which Rolling Stone praised as a buoyant track with a vibrant expression of queer love. All three members of the band identify as queer. In June 2022, MUNA released their self-titled third studio album, which received widespread acclaim. They recently performed at NPR's Tiny Desk and have been touring with Swift on select dates of the Eras Tour. Additionally, they have embarked on their own solo tour and opened for Lorde on the Australian leg of her Solar Power tour.

While MUNA has sold out most of their solo tour dates at venues with capacities of 3,000-4,000 fans, performing for the 55,000 fans each night at Arrowhead Stadium will be a different experience. MUNA is expected to take the stage after Gracie Abrams and before Taylor Swift, bringing their unique sound and energy to the enthusiastic crowd.
