Kim Jong-Un of North Korea Vows to Strengthen Ties with Vladimir Putin Amid Increasing Strategic Collaboration

On Monday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un expressed his support and solidarity with Russia in a message released by state media KCNA to commemorate Russia's National Day. In his message, Kim emphasized the importance of "closer strategic cooperation" between North Korea and Russia, stating that they should "hold hands firmly" to achieve the shared goal of building powerful nations. He also defended Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, asserting that justice will prevail and the Russian people will continue to add glory to their history of victory.

The strengthening ties between Moscow and Pyongyang come at a time when both countries are facing diplomatic and economic isolation. According to Anthony V. Rinna, a Senior Editor with the Sino-NK research group, the peripheral status and isolation of Russia and North Korea have created a favorable environment for collaboration between the two nations. Rinna argues that their relationship serves as a way to circumvent the economic sanctions imposed on them in recent years.

It is worth noting that North Korea's support for Russia's actions in Ukraine goes against international sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council, of which Russia is a member. Despite the "maximum pressure" campaign aimed at dismantling North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, the country has not complied. Instead, it has faced worsening economic conditions, including reports of food shortages attributed to drops in production, UN sanctions, and reduced trade due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In July 2022, following Russia's invasion of eastern Ukraine, North Korea recognized two breakaway republics supported by Russia. This move opens up the potential for North Korean workers to participate in the reconstruction of infrastructure in these Russia-controlled territories in Ukraine. Such collaboration further challenges the international sanctions imposed on North Korea.

The deepening connection between Moscow and Pyongyang highlights their shared interests and the advantages they see in working together. Both countries are seeking to overcome their isolation and find avenues for economic cooperation.
