'Eagles Corner Injured, Young LB Hurt in Preseason Game vs. Browns'
The Philadelphia Eagles have been hit with multiple injuries during their preseason game against the Cleveland Browns.
The Philadelphia Eagles had a relatively injury-free season last year, but unfortunately, that luck has not carried over into this year's preseason. In their recent game against the Cleveland Browns, two Eagles players were forced to leave the field due to injuries, one of which appears to be quite serious.
Cornerback Zech McPhearson suffered an ankle injury during the second quarter and had to be carted off to the locker room. This happened after he deflected a pass and tried to chase down the ball. McPhearson had difficulty walking back to the sideline and ultimately needed assistance to leave the field. Prior to the injury, Browns quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson had been targeting McPhearson, eventually completing a 36-yard pass to Browns wide receiver Cedric Tillman. McPhearson had been transitioning from an outside cornerback to the slot position and had been performing well during training camp. If his injury keeps him out for an extended period of time, it could give Josiah Scott more playing time in the slot and potentially open up a roster spot for undrafted free agents Eli Ricks or Mekhi Garner.
In addition to McPhearson, linebacker Nolan Smith also suffered an injury during the game. He hurt his shoulder while chasing down Browns wide receiver Anthony Schwartz on an end-around run. Smith was initially evaluated in the medical tent and was deemed questionable to return. However, he was later taken into the locker room for further evaluation. Smith, who was the 30th overall pick in this year's draft, has been impressive in his first NFL action, making an impact on the outside run game and putting pressure on the opposing team's offense. While the injury doesn't seem serious at first glance, it does come at a time when the Eagles are already thin at the edge rusher position.
To make matters worse, linebacker Haason Reddick will undergo surgery on his injured thumb, which he sustained during a joint practice with the Browns earlier in the week. The Eagles are also missing linebacker Patrick Johnson, who is dealing with an ankle injury.
These injuries are a setback for the Eagles as they prepare for the upcoming season. The team will need to rely on their depth and potentially give more opportunities to younger, unproven players. It's a challenging situation, but the Eagles will need to find ways to overcome these obstacles and ensure they have a strong and healthy roster when the regular season begins.
