'Ron Rivera selects Sam Howell as starting QB for Washington Commanders'

Sam Howell has been named the starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders, becoming the team's seventh different season-opening starter in as many years.

The Washington Commanders have named Sam Howell as their starting quarterback, according to Coach Ron Rivera. This decision comes after discussions with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and quarterbacks coach Tavita Pritchard. If Howell remains healthy, he will be the seventh different season-opening starter for the team in as many years.

Rivera expressed his satisfaction with Howell's growth and improvement since OTAs and minicamp. He also praised Howell's performance during training camp and in the exhibition opener against the Cleveland Browns, where he went 9 of 12 for 77 yards and a touchdown. Howell's play during joint practices with the Baltimore Ravens solidified his position as the starter.

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin spoke highly of Howell's ability to read the field and create opportunities for the team. Rivera and the Commanders had planned to give Howell this opportunity after his impressive NFL debut in Week 18 of last season.

Veteran Jacoby Brissett will serve as Howell's backup when the Commanders face the Arizona Cardinals on September 10. The team signed Brissett during the offseason to compete with Howell for the starting position.

Howell expressed confidence in his abilities and his comfort with the offense. He credited his improvement throughout camp and his familiarity with the first-team snaps given to him by Rivera.

Overall, the Commanders have chosen Howell as their starting quarterback based on his growth, performance, and potential to lead the team to success in the upcoming season.
