Dan Campbell on Lions offensive depth following loss to Jaguars: Improving and Always Seeking Upgrades
The Detroit Lions suffered a humbling preseason loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, exposing their lack of quality and depth in multiple position groups. The offense struggled against the Jaguars' defensive reserves, gaining only 131 net yards and nine first downs. Head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged the need to evaluate the team's depth at wide receiver and offensive line. The Lions may look to acquire waived players or veterans in order to address these weaknesses.
In Saturday's preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Detroit Lions suffered a humbling loss that exposed the lack of quality and proven depth in several position groups. The team chose to rest their starters and key reserves, resulting in a crushing 25-7 defeat.
The Lions' offense, in particular, struggled against the Jaguars' defensive reserves. They only managed to gain 131 net yards and secure nine first downs throughout the game.
As a whole, the Lions' offense appeared weak and ineffective. While there were a few individuals who had decent performances, two position groups stood out as inadequate and inept – the offensive line and the wide receivers.
Head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged this issue after the game, stating that the team would thoroughly analyze the game film to determine if any changes needed to be made.
"We're working through it," Campbell said. "We'll look at this tape and identify the players we can depend on. You just never know. Brad and his crew are evaluating not only our own squad but also 31 other teams."
With roster cutdowns approaching, Lions general manager Brad Holmes and his pro personnel department will have the opportunity to acquire players who have been waived by other teams or are at risk of not making the final roster. They previously attempted this strategy by trading for Jets wide receiver Denzel Mims, but it did not yield positive results.
"We're always looking," Campbell added. "We'll take the positives from this game and learn from them. But we'll also address the negatives and determine what can be done."
While the free agent market for offensive linemen is currently thin and highly competitive, the wide receiver position offers more options. There are proven veterans available, such as Jarvis Landry, Sammy Watkins, Rashard Higgins, or T.Y. Hilton, who could potentially provide a temporary solution until Jameson Williams returns from his suspension. However, it should be noted that these players have not consistently made a significant impact in recent seasons.
The Lions did sign wide receiver Jason Moore, a lower-tier player, after waiving Mims. It appears that they are seeking a deep reserve with specific attributes that could be useful in certain situations. However, acquiring another player of this caliber may not address the concerns of fans who witnessed the wide receivers struggle to get open and make reliable catches against the Jaguars.
