Simmons was the eighth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft and is entering the final year of his rookie deal in 2023. The Cardinals decided not to exercise his fifth-year option, which ultimately led to the trade.

The trade came as a shock to NFL fans, as Simmons has been a consistent and productive player in his first three seasons. Simmons expressed a desire to no longer play linebacker and instead focus on playing defensive back. In fact, he spent 45% of his defensive snaps last season playing cornerback. His athleticism and skills make him well-suited for this role.

The New York Giants will greatly benefit from having a player with Simmons' versatility on their roster. Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale will be able to utilize Simmons' abilities on defense, especially in the challenging NFC East division. Having a speedy and explosive player in the backfield will give the Giants an advantage.
