John Isner pays emotional tribute to family and fans after advancing to the second round at the 2023 US Open.
An emotional John Isner expressed his gratitude and appreciation for his family, friends, and long-time fans after his victorious first-round match at the 2023 US Open. Isner had previously announced his retirement from professional tennis, making this his final appearance at his home Major.
However, the American tennis player decided to postpone his retirement as he began his campaign with a remarkable win against Argentine Facundo Diaz Acosta. The match lasted just under two and a half hours, with Isner clinching victory with a score of 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(1).
Throughout the match, Isner was supported by his passionate entourage, including his wife Madison, their four children, his parents Robert and Karen, and his brother Jordan. Not only did his family show their unwavering support, but his fellow players, such as Bob and Mike Bryan, Steve Johnson, Sam Querrey, Daniel Nestor, and Jackson Withrow, also came out to cheer him on.
After securing his win, Isner was pleasantly surprised by a video tribute from the New York Major and was presented with a commemorative plaque that showcased some of his most memorable career highlights.
During an interview with close friend and former Davis Cup teammate James Blake, Isner became visibly emotional as he reflected on his tennis career. The 38-year-old acknowledged the significant role that tennis has played in his life, allowing him to meet his wife and build a loving family with four beautiful children.
Struggling to hold back tears, Isner said, "I'm gonna try not to get emotional. Man, I've had an incredible career. I've been so fortunate. I've played this sport for so long and to develop so many friends and family. Without tennis, I wouldn't have met my wife. I wouldn't have the amazing family that I have, four beautiful kids. That's really what it's all about."
Isner also expressed his hope to continue advancing in the tournament, with the desire for his children to have lasting memories of watching their father compete. He added, "Hopefully I can keep playing some more and my older ones can remember watching their dad play. I think that's very, very special."
Grateful for the immense support he has received throughout his 17-year career at the US Open, Isner expressed his appreciation for the opportunities he has had to compete at his home Slam. He acknowledged the incredible support from fans, stating, "The support I've had for the last 17 years on tour has been amazing. This tournament especially. You fans are absolutely incredible. To be American and play this event 17 times, I do not take that for granted. So lucky, so blessed."
Despite his impending retirement, Isner conveyed his determination to continue his journey in the Major and requested the continued support of his fans throughout the remainder of his career. He said, "You know, it's not goodbye yet cause I'm still alive. You know, I'm actually feeling pretty good so I want to try and keep this thing going as long as I possibly can. I'm going to need you guys behind me every step of the way please. Thank you."
In the second round of the 2023 US Open, Isner will face fellow American Michael Mmoh. Mmoh secured his spot in the second round by upsetting 11th seed Karen Khachanov with a score of 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
