Travis Scott's 'Utopia' Tour Excludes Houston Amidst Astroworld Tragedy
Travis Scott's "Utopia" tour excludes Houston after Astroworld tragedy; city officials condemn the decision. Tour dates announced on Instagram.
Travis Scott, the renowned rapper and artist behind hits like "goosebumps," has announced his upcoming "Utopia Presents Circus Maximus" tour on Instagram. However, fans in his hometown of Houston were disappointed to learn that the tour would not include a stop in the city where his Astroworld festival turned tragic in 2021. The tour, consisting of 28 stops, will kick off in Charlotte, North Carolina on October 11 and conclude in Toronto on December 29.
Originally, the tour was scheduled to include a performance at Houston's Toyota Center on October 19, which would have marked Scott's first show in the city since the Astroworld incident. However, city authorities swiftly expressed their disapproval of the decision. Houston Police Officers' Union president Douglas Griffith released a statement, referencing the recently released 1,200-page report on the catastrophe, stating that it was unreasonable to allow Scott and the production company to hold another concert in the city. He called on elected officials to take a stand against it.
The Astroworld tragedy occurred on November 5, 2021, during the first night of the festival. A crowd crush resulted in the deaths of 10 attendees, including a 9-year-old boy, and left thousands injured. Following a 19-month criminal investigation, a Texas grand jury decided in June not to indict Scott or five others in connection with the disaster. Houston Police had just completed their complex investigation prior to this decision.
One of the challenges faced by Scott in resuming his tour was obtaining insurance coverage. The pending criminal investigation made it difficult to secure insurance, according to lawyer Kent Schaffer. However, with the grand jury's decision, Scott can now move forward with his plans. It is important to remember that in the United States, everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
While the "Utopia Presents Circus Maximus" tour will not include a stop in Houston, Scott will perform in two other Texas cities. On November 17, he will take the stage in Dallas, followed by a performance in Austin on November 21. Fans in these cities will have the opportunity to experience Scott's energetic and captivating live performances. The tour will then continue to various locations across the United States and conclude in Toronto.
Despite the disappointment of Houston fans, Scott's tour announcement has generated excitement among his followers. With his unique style and ability to captivate audiences, Scott's performances are highly anticipated. As the tour dates approach, fans across the country eagerly await the opportunity to witness his musical talents firsthand.
