'Florida State Soars into Top Five, Colorado Breaks into College Football Rankings in Latest AP Top 25 Poll'
Florida State and Colorado were the big winners in Week 1, moving up in the latest AP Top 25 poll.
The latest AP Top 25 poll was released on Tuesday following the conclusion of Week 1 action on Labor Day. While Georgia maintains its position as the top-ranked team in the country, there have been some changes in the top 10, including the return of a familiar name to the top five.
Florida State's impressive 45-21 victory over LSU on Sunday caught the attention of AP Top 25 voters, propelling the Seminoles from No. 8 to No. 4 in the rankings. This is the highest ranking for Florida State since being ranked No. 3 in the 2017 preseason poll and the highest in-season ranking for the program since Week 3 in 2016. On the other hand, LSU suffered the consequences of the loss, dropping from No. 5 to No. 14 in the rankings.
Following Georgia at the top of the polls are Michigan at No. 2, Alabama moving up to No. 3, Florida State at No. 4, and Ohio State dropping two spots to No. 5. Clemson's loss to Duke on Monday allowed other teams further down the rankings to make their way into the top 10. Clemson's significant drop of 16 spots to No. 25 gave Duke their first AP Top 25 appearance since 2018, securing the No. 21 spot. Washington, Tennessee, and Notre Dame were among the biggest movers in the rankings, climbing multiple spots into the top 10.
The emergence of Colorado at No. 22 is a testament to the belief in Deion Sanders' roster and program overhaul in Boulder. Despite not receiving a single vote in the preseason poll, Colorado's victory over TCU as a three-touchdown road underdog has changed the perception of the team among voters. Colorado has an opportunity to solidify their standing in the poll with another high-profile matchup in Week 2 against Nebraska.
