Medical staff rushed to his aid, helping him off the field as he couldn't put any weight on his left leg. After spending some time in the medical tent, McNamara was eventually carted off the sideline and into the tunnel, leaving his teammates and fans concerned for his well-being.

Despite the setback, the Iowa defense remained focused on their task at hand. Junior cornerback Cooper DeJean emphasized the team's commitment to fighting and executing their job, acknowledging that injuries are beyond their control. He praised McNamara's leadership but assured that the defense was determined to do their part in stopping Michigan State and providing support to the offense.

Senior tight end Erick All, who also transferred from Michigan, expressed his devastation upon learning of McNamara's injury. In a postgame press conference, All mentioned his encounter with McNamara in the training room during halftime, offering words of encouragement and support. He admitted that it was a difficult situation to witness and expressed his prayers for McNamara's recovery.

McNamara was eventually ruled out for the remainder of the game and returned to the sideline on crutches, his left leg wrapped. Despite his own disappointment, he remained a source of encouragement for sophomore quarterback Deacon Hill, who stepped in to fill McNamara's shoes.
