Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar carjacked gunpoint Washington D.C.
Democratic Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar was carjacked at gunpoint near his residence in Washington, D.C., but escaped unharmed.
Democratic Texas Representative Henry Cuellar returned to work on Tuesday, just hours after he was carjacked at gunpoint near his home in the Navy Yard area of Washington, D.C. The incident occurred on Monday night as Cuellar was attempting to park his car near the intersection of New Jersey and K Street, less than a mile from the Capitol. According to the DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency, three armed assailants approached Cuellar around 9:30 p.m. and have yet to be apprehended.
Cuellar spoke to reporters on Tuesday, recounting the terrifying experience. He described how the robbers suddenly appeared and pointed guns at him. Despite having a black belt, Cuellar quickly realized that he was outnumbered and unable to defend himself. He decided to remain calm and comply with their demands. "They said they wanted my car, and I said, 'Sure.' You got to keep calm under those situations, and they took off," Cuellar said.
Law enforcement sources informed NBC Washington that Cuellar's vehicle was discovered approximately 2 miles away in the Anacostia neighborhood. Fortunately, all of Cuellar's belongings were accounted for, with the exception of the sushi dinner he had been bringing home for the night. Cuellar jokingly expressed his disappointment about the missing sushi, stating, "They recovered the car, they recovered everything. What really got me upset was they took my sushi, but anyway, that's something else."
This incident marks the second assault on a member of Congress in the District of Columbia this year. In February, Democratic Representative Angie Craig of Minnesota was assaulted in her apartment building but managed to escape without any major injuries. Police have stated that in both cases, there does not appear to be any political motivation behind the attacks.
