Billie Jean King Calls for Improved Tennis Scheduling & Integration of BJK, Davis Cups
Billie Jean King calls for better coordination between tennis organizations to avoid conflicts in tournament schedules.
Billie Jean King is advocating for better coordination between the groups responsible for scheduling tennis events to prevent conflicts like the one that led top players Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Jessica Pegula to choose to compete in the WTA Finals rather than the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. King expressed her desire for a more organized calendar during a conference call promoting the Billie Jean King Cup, which will take place in Seville, Spain from November 7-12. She mentioned that she is unsure how much discussion has taken place between the International Tennis Federation (ITF), which oversees the BJK Cup, and the WTA, which hosts its championships from October 29 to November 5 in Cancun, Mexico.
King emphasized the need for all parties involved to come together and establish a clearer schedule for the players, as last-minute decisions about tournament participation are unfair. She suggested that these decisions should be made well in advance, rather than in October or September. Conchita Martinez, the tournament director for the BJK Cup Finals and a former player who has won the team competition when it was known as the Fed Cup, echoed King's sentiments, stating that collaboration is necessary to find better solutions.
The WTA announced the dates for its season-ending tour event in June but did not disclose the location until September 7. Similarly, the decision to hold the 2022 WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas was only announced in September of the previous year. This lack of transparency and late announcements posed issues for players like Swiatek, who pointed out the problems with the timing and location of the WTA Finals conflicting with the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. Swiatek expressed concerns about the safety and potential for injury in such situations. Consequently, she chose to participate in the WTA Finals instead of representing Poland at the BJK Cup Finals in both 2022 and the current year.
Joining Swiatek in Mexico for the WTA Finals are Coco Gauff, the 19-year-old American who recently won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open, and Jessica Pegula. As a result, three of the top four women in the WTA rankings will not be present at the BJK Cup Finals: Swiatek (No. 2), Gauff (No. 3), and Pegula (No. 4). Despite this, Martinez emphasized the positive aspects of the event, highlighting the participation of other esteemed players such as Grand Slam singles champions Marketa Vondrousova and Barbora Krejcikova for the Czech Republic, Sloane Stephens for the United States, and Elena Rybakina for Kazakhstan.
King also expressed her desire to see the BJK Cup and its male counterpart, the Davis Cup, combined. She has long advocated for greater collaboration between men's and women's tennis.
