Greta Thunberg Deletes Anti-Semitic Tweet
Climate activist Greta Thunberg accused of spreading anti-Semitism after supporting Palestinians, prompts social media backlash and deletion of post.
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg faced accusations of spreading anti-Semitic messages on social media after expressing support for the Palestinians. Thunberg shared a photo of herself and three other women holding pro-Palestinian posters, calling for a ceasefire and justice for Palestinians. However, some noticed that one of the women had a small blue stuffed octopus, which drew comparisons to anti-Semitic cartoons depicting Jews as menacing octopuses. Thunberg quickly deleted the post and explained that she was unaware of the symbol's connotations, stating that the toy is often used by autistic individuals to communicate feelings. She emphasized her opposition to discrimination and condemned anti-Semitism in all forms. While some defended Thunberg, Israel's official account criticized her stance, highlighting the victims of Hamas attacks. Former Israel Defense Forces spokesman Arye Sharuz Shalicar went as far as calling anyone who identifies with Thunberg a "terror supporter." Thunberg gained fame in 2018 for her climate change activism and has since become a prominent voice on the issue, speaking at global platforms like the UN and facing detentions for her activism.
