"New Details Released in Sergio Brown Case: Ex-NFL Player Charged with Killing Mother"
Former NFL player Sergio Brown, charged with killing his mother, bought a one-way ticket to Cancun, Mexico, after being the last person seen with the woman before her slaying last month.
Former NFL player Sergio Brown, who has been charged with killing his mother, made headlines again as it was revealed that he had purchased a one-way ticket to Cancun, Mexico, shortly after being seen with his mother before her slaying last month. The prosecutor presented this information during a detention hearing held on Wednesday, where Cook County Judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez denied Brown pretrial release. He will remain detained until his next court date on November 22.
The body of Brown's mother, Myrtle Brown, was discovered on September 16 near a creek in Maywood, a suburb located about 12 miles west of Chicago. The medical examiner determined her death to be a homicide and confirmed that she had suffered injuries from an assault.
Sergio Brown, 35, and his 73-year-old mother lived together in Maywood. On October 7, he was deported from Mexico back to the U.S. and was subsequently brought back to Illinois on Tuesday, according to local news outlets.
During the detention hearing, Brown appeared in court wearing a gray sweatshirt and red basketball shorts, with his wrists bound in handcuffs. He remained silent except when directly addressed by the judge, showing no visible emotion.
The prosecutor revealed that Brown was the last person seen with his mother and that he had been observed burning fabric on the night of her death, September 14. The following morning, he flew to Cancun, and charges on his credit card indicated that he had rented two homes in Colombia before being deported.
Cellphone records showed that Brown and his mother were in close proximity to each other at the estimated time of her death, further raising suspicion. Additionally, investigators found DNA similarities between samples taken from under Myrtle Brown's fingernails and a toothbrush found in Sergio Brown's bedroom. However, the public defender argued that there was no direct evidence and that the case relied solely on circumstantial evidence.
At this time, Charnelle Dunlap, an assistant public defender working on the case, stated that their office was not in a position to comment further.
Sergio Brown attended Proviso East High School in Maywood and played college football at the University of Notre Dame. He went on to have a career in the NFL, signing with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He also played for the Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills before retiring in 2016.
