Newcastle United: First Champions League Loss of Season as Manchester City Overcome Young Boys
Borussia Dortmund narrowly defeated Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League, while Paris Saint Germain and Barcelona also secured wins.
Borussia Dortmund emerged victorious in a closely contested match against Newcastle United on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Paris Saint Germain and Barcelona also secured wins, while Celtic managed a draw against Atletico Madrid.
For Eddie Howe's Newcastle United, it was their first defeat in this season's UEFA Champions League as they were narrowly beaten 1-0 at home by Borussia Dortmund. Despite drawing against AC Milan and securing a stunning victory over Paris Saint Germain in their first two games back in the Champions League after 20 years, Newcastle faced a tough challenge against Dortmund in Group F.
Both teams had their fair share of opportunities in the game. Anthony Gordon had two attempts on goal for Newcastle, while Donyell Malen also had a couple of efforts saved by Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope. Unfortunately for Howe, he had to substitute Alexander Isak just 15 minutes into the game due to a recurring groin issue.
Towards the end of the first half, Gordon was dispossessed by Nico Schlotterbeck, allowing Dortmund's Marco Reus to receive a pass and set up Felix Nmecha, who slotted the ball past Pope, giving Dortmund a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Newcastle pushed for an equalizer. Callum Wilson had a great chance, but his close-range effort was stopped by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. The home side came agonizingly close to scoring on two occasions, with both Wilson and Gordon hitting the crossbar.
Despite Newcastle's efforts, Dortmund managed to hold on to their 1-0 lead and emerged as the winners. In the other Group F match, Paris Saint Germain defeated AC Milan 3-0 at home, placing them at the top of the group with six points. Dortmund sits in second place with four points, ahead of Newcastle based on their head-to-head record.
Meanwhile, current champions Manchester City continued their impressive run in the group stage with a 3-1 away victory against Young Boys. Erling Haaland scored a second-half brace to secure the win for Pep Guardiola's team. In Group G, Manchester City leads with nine points, followed by RB Leipzig with six points after their 3-1 victory over Crvena Zvezda.
In Group E, Celtic earned their first point in the Champions League this season with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid. Despite taking the lead twice through goals from Kyogo Furuhashi and Luis Palma, Celtic were pegged back by Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata's goals for Atletico Madrid. In the other Group E match, Feyenoord defeated Lazio 3-1 at home, with Santiago Gimenez scoring twice to take them to the top of the group with six points.
Barcelona maintained their perfect record in Europe this season with a 2-1 home victory over Shakhtar Donetsk. First-half goals from Ferran Torres and Fermin Lopez secured the win for Barcelona, solidifying their position at the top of Group H. FC Porto also had a successful away match, beating Antwerp 4-1, with Evanilson scoring a second-half hat-trick. Porto currently sits in second place in Group H.
