Teravainen scores late in a Hurricanes' 3-2 win over Flyers
The Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2, extending their winning streak to eight games.
The Carolina Hurricanes emerged victorious with a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night, thanks to Teuvo Teravainen's game-winning goal with just under four minutes left to play. Stefan Noesen and Michael Bunting also contributed goals for the Hurricanes, extending their winning streak to eight games. Frederik Andersen made 26 saves to secure the victory.
Teravainen, who scored his eighth goal of the season, praised Andersen's outstanding performance, acknowledging that he kept the team in the game. Despite taking a few too many penalties, the Hurricanes' penalty kill unit did an excellent job and helped maintain their competitive edge.
The Flyers, on the other hand, have struggled in recent games, losing four out of their last five matchups. Owen Tippett and Garnet Hathaway managed to find the back of the net for Philadelphia, but it wasn't enough to secure a victory. Head coach John Tortorella expressed frustration with the team's missed scoring opportunities, emphasizing the need to capitalize on chances against strong opponents.
Carolina's penalty kill played a crucial role in building momentum for the team, shutting down the Flyers' power play and preventing them from converting on any of their five opportunities. Andersen, despite a shaky start allowing goals from Tippett and Hathaway in the first period, regrouped and delivered a solid performance to secure his fourth win of the season.
As the game reached its late stages, both teams remained evenly matched. However, Carolina's offensive pressure paid off when Teravainen received a pass from Jesperi Kotkaniemi and swiftly scored the game-winning goal, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. Hurricanes' head coach Rod Brind'Amour commended Teravainen's skill and composure in crucial moments.
To seal the victory, the Hurricanes controlled the puck, preventing the Flyers from pulling their goaltender for an extra skater. Philadelphia failed to register a single shot on goal in the final 5:27 of the game, allowing Carolina to secure the win.
Tortorella acknowledged that Andersen didn't have the best start to the game but commended his exceptional performance in the third period, where he made crucial saves to keep the Hurricanes in the lead.
The scoring began early in the game when Noesen capitalized on a defensive zone turnover by the Flyers, scoring his second goal of the season with a wrist shot past Carter Hart. The Flyers quickly responded, with Tippett's knuckler finding its way past Andersen's glove, followed by Hathaway's backhander that slipped between the goalie's pads.
In the second period, Bunting tied the game 2-2 with a powerful one-timer off a faceoff during a power play opportunity.
Looking ahead, the Hurricanes will face off against the New York Rangers on Thursday night, while the Flyers will host the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night to kick off a home-and-home series.
