The Dallas Cowboys are hosting a workout for free-agent wide receiver Martavis Bryant, who was reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
The Dallas Cowboys are set to bring in free-agent wide receiver Martavis Bryant for a workout on Tuesday, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini. If Bryant doesn't come to an agreement with Dallas, Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz reported that he plans to work out for the Tennessee Titans.
Bryant has been out of the NFL since his indefinite suspension in 2018, but his agent announced that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has reinstated him, opening the door for a potential comeback. During his time in the NFL, Bryant was known for his ability as a deep threat, catching 145 passes for 2,183 yards and 17 touchdowns in 44 appearances. His best season came in 2015 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he recorded 50 receptions, 765 yards, and six touchdowns.
Since his suspension, Bryant has played in the CFL, the Fan Controlled Football League, and most recently the XFL. With concerns about his age and time away from the game, there are questions about whether the 6'3", 211-pound wide receiver can still perform at the NFL level.
For the Cowboys, there's minimal risk in bringing Bryant in for a workout, as the team has an open spot on its practice squad, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. Dallas could benefit from adding depth behind CeeDee Lamb, who is having a standout season, leading the team with 824 receiving yards. The next closest player, tight end Jake Ferguson, has 328 yards. Additionally, Michael Gallup has seen a decline in performance since his ACL tear, with his yards per reception dropping from 15.6 to 11.6 since the start of the 2021 season.
Bringing in Bryant could potentially help offset some of the decline in the Cowboys' passing game due to Gallup's performance. Overall, it's a low-risk move for Dallas to see if Bryant can make a positive impact.
