Murder at the End of the World Premiere Recap: Grade First Two Episodes of Hulu's Whodunit
Hulu's new mystery drama A Murder at the End of the World was originally slated for an Aug. 29 debut.
Hulu's new mystery drama A Murder at the End of the World was initially set to premiere on Aug. 29, but the decision to delay the release until the sun sets at 5 pm seems fitting for a moody, wintry show like this one.
The two-episode series premiere, which debuted on Hulu Tuesday, introduces us to Darby Hart (The Crown's Emma Corrin), an experienced hacker and amateur sleuth who grew up around crime scenes and dead bodies due to her father's career as a medical examiner in Iowa. Darby is reading an excerpt from her new book The Silver Doe, which is named after a memorable Jane Doe whose only remains were her bones and a pair of silver earrings.
As Darby reads at a local bookstore, we learn through flashbacks that she developed an intense relationship with a man named Bill Farrah (Trust's Harris Dickinson), whom she met on a web-sleuthing forum as she began to dabble in crime-solving. They pursued the Silver Doe case, eventually piecing together that the Silver Doe was just one of several women murdered by a serial killer. However, their investigation became too real, and Bill left Darby after a frightening encounter with the potential killer.
After her bookstore reading, Darby receives an invitation to an annual retreat held by billionaire tech entrepreneur Andy Ronson (Oscar nominee Clive Owen) via an augmented reality app on her phone. The destination is Iceland, and Darby is joined by a handful of other guests with varying backgrounds and expertise.
During the retreat, Darby unexpectedly encounters Bill, and they clear the air about their past. Later, Darby witnesses a violent encounter in Bill's hotel room, leading to his death. Darby becomes suspicious when Andy cites an overdose as Bill's cause of death and decides to investigate further. She finds an unlikely ally in Lee, Andy's wife, and together they uncover evidence that suggests foul play in Bill's death.
The second episode concludes with a flashback to Darby and Bill's blossoming relationship, leaving viewers eager to see what happens next.
