Gerrit Cole Wins 1st AL Cy Young Award; Blake Snell Takes NL Prize
Gerrit Cole won his first American League Cy Young Award, and Blake Snell took home Cy Young honors in the National League.
Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees and Blake Snell of the San Diego Padres were awarded the American League and National League Cy Young Awards, respectively. Cole, who had previously been a runner-up for the award twice, received all 30 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He led the AL in ERA and innings and finished the season with a two-hit shutout. Snell, who led the majors with a 2.25 ERA, had a slow start to the season but finished strong, leading the Padres to a disappointing 82-80 record. Both pitchers shined despite their teams' lackluster performances. Snell, who will become a free agent, rejected a $20,325,000 qualifying offer from the Padres. Webb and Gallen finished behind him in the NL voting, and Gray and Gausman finished behind Cole in the AL voting.
