Spotify users react to Wrapped 2023 sound towns from Burlington to San Luis Obispo
Spotify Wrapped is back with "sound towns" to show where your music taste took you, sparking social media buzz.
Spotify Wrapped is making a comeback, and this time it's taking listeners on a journey to their "sound towns" to show them where their music tastes have led them.
The annual Spotify tradition usually provides users with a set of Instagram Story-friendly statistics, revealing their most-listened artists, songs, and podcasts. However, in the latest 2023 edition, the platform has introduced "sound towns" to its repertoire.
Similar to the feature that allows users to see which five cities their favorite artists have the most listeners in, the new addition to Spotify Wrapped assigns users "sound towns," which are cities based on their affinity for specific songs and artists in 2023.
According to Spotify, these "sound towns" highlight "the city that has the most similar taste profile to yours." To find your "sound town," simply tap on the third slide of your Spotify Wrapped to reveal your results and easily share your "sound town" directly to your social media platform of choice.
Users have taken to social media to dissect what their "sound town" means and what Spotify is trying to convey by assigning them places like Burlington, Vermont, and San Luis Obispo, California.
Burlington seems to be assigned to many who listen to indie and folk artists, such as Hozier and boygenius, who have a large indie following and LGBTQ+ fan base. Similarly, Berkeley, California, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, are also associated with a concentration of LGBTQ+ individuals who listen to indie music.
On the other hand, many users have shared that they got San Luis Obispo as their "sound town" due to their listening habits of popular indie artists like Tyler the Creator, beabadobee, and Mac Demarco.
With users enthusiastically sharing their Spotify Wrapped locales, it appears that Spotify has introduced a feature that is set to make a splash on social media. The head of global marketing experience at Spotify, Louisa Ferguson, mentioned that this year's Spotify Wrapped was inspired by the "chaos" of the internet and the fast-paced nature of consuming culture in 2023.
The personalized Spotify Wrapped roundup for 2023 was made available on November 29th.
