Former Tennessee Titans tight end Frank Wycheck, who is most famously remembered for his role in the "Music City Miracle," tragically passed away on Saturday at the age of 52.
According to a statement released by his family and shared by the Titans, Wycheck appears to have suffered a fall inside his home in Chattanooga, Tenn., resulting in a head injury. He was found unresponsive later that afternoon.
Wycheck's most iconic moment came during the Titans' AFC wild-card game against the Buffalo Bills on Jan. 8, 2000. With just 16 seconds left in the game and the Bills leading 16-15, Tennessee executed a clever trick play that involved Wycheck receiving the ball from fullback Lorenzo Neal and then throwing it across the field to Kevin Dyson, who sprinted for a game-winning touchdown, securing a 22-16 victory for the Titans.
Following this dramatic win, the Titans went on to compete in Super Bowl XXXIV, where they ultimately fell to the St. Louis Rams with a score of 23-16 on Jan. 30.
Originally from Philadelphia, Wycheck was drafted by Washington in the sixth round of the 1993 NFL Draft and spent two seasons with the team. He then joined the Houston Oilers and continued with the franchise after its move to Tennessee, retiring as a member of the Titans after the 2003 season. His contributions to the team earned him a place in the Titans' Ring of Honor.
Throughout his career, Wycheck amassed 505 catches for 5,126 yards and 28 touchdowns in 155 games, with 135 starts, for both Washington and the Houston/Tennessee franchise.
In light of his passing, Wycheck's family has expressed their intention to collaborate with specialists in brain injury and CTE research, underscoring the importance of understanding and addressing the impact of such conditions on athletes.
